Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP)

Platelet‐rich plasma (PRP) is a type of regenerative medicine within the field of orthobiologics. PRP involves using the part of your blood which contains a high concentration of platelets and other growth factors to stimulate the natural healing process.

This procedure can be done in our office and involves drawing your own blood and concentrating it with a special kit and centrifuge. Once the concentration has been drawn off, the PRP will be injected into your site of pain under ultrasound.

Clinical work over the last several years has established the safety and usefulness of PRP for tissue repair and healing in joints and tendons resulting in reduced pain and improved function for many who have had this procedure. It is used to decrease pain and improve function in some forms of arthritis as well. There are a multitude of studies with promising results for the following conditions: tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis), mild to moderate knee osteoarthritis, shoulder pain (rotator cuff tendinitis), and heel pain (Achilles tendinitis).

There are new studies ongoing that support the use of PRP for many other conditions as well so please consult with one of our physicians to discuss if this is an appropriate procedure for you.
